Why Makeup is More Than Just "Looking Good": A Heart-to-Heart on Self-Care
Does your morning makeup routine ever feel like a chore? Something you just have to do for work, or out of a sense of social obligation?
Recently, we've received so many wonderful messages from readers and viewers saying that makeup used to feel like a strict requirement, but after trying some new techniques, it's become the favorite part of their morning. Hearing that is the greatest compliment a makeup artist could ever receive! It actually sparks a really important conversation about the true purpose of cosmetics.
If you are stuck in a rut, here is a little reminder about why we really put on makeup, and how shifting your mindset can transform your mornings.
The Real Power of Makeup (It's Not About Appearance)
As a professional makeup artist, I'll be the first to tell you: makeup is not a necessity. You absolutely do not have to wear it. But after painting so many faces, I've realized that makeup's greatest power isn't in changing how you look — it's in changing how you feel.
Think about it. When you're lounging around bare-faced in your pajamas, you probably don't want to leave the house. But the second you take a few minutes to put on a little blush, swipe on some mascara, and change your clothes, your brain flips a switch. Suddenly, staying home feels like a waste! It is an instant, highly accessible mood booster that gives you the energy to take on the day.
Do It For You, Not For Them
For a long time, society has framed makeup as a polite "manner" or an expectation to be presentable for other people. Let's throw that rule out the window.
Makeup should always be for you. It should be a tool for self-care, a way to express your creativity, and a method to simply lift your own spirits. When you stop treating your foundation like a required uniform and start treating it as a fun form of self-love, the entire experience changes.
Find Your Morning Ritual
Try to turn your beauty routine into a moment of peace rather than a frantic rush. For me, no matter how early my schedule starts, sitting down with a cup of coffee and doing my makeup is my quiet time. It's the moment I center my thoughts, breathe, and press the "ON" switch for the day to say, "I'm ready to do this."
The next time you sit at your vanity, I hope you try a new technique — just for fun, just for you — and think, "I can't wait to see how this looks today!"
